Heat Pump and HVAC Repair in Modesto
Some problems are not the furnace or the AC on its own. They are the heat pump that frosts up in the fog, the upstairs that never cools, or the thermostat that does not talk to the equipment it is wired to.

Heat pumps in Valley fog
More Modesto homes have a heat pump than a decade ago. California's energy code leans new construction toward them, and MID households pay MID's electric rates rather than PG&E's, which changes the running-cost sums. A heat pump heats by pulling warmth out of outdoor air, and it does that well down into the 30s.
Tule fog is its awkward condition: temperatures just above freezing and air that is close to saturated. Frost builds on the outdoor coil faster in that air than on a dry, colder night. The heat pump handles it with a defrost cycle, briefly reversing to warm the coil. During defrost the outdoor fan stops, the unit may hiss or clunk, and a cloud of steam rises off it. All of that is normal. What is not normal is a coil that stays white with ice for hours, or a unit that defrosts every few minutes.
The backup heat
Most ducted heat pumps carry electric resistance strips in the air handler for very cold mornings and for defrost. They are expensive to run. If your bill jumped in December and the thermostat shows "aux" or "emergency heat" much of the time, the heat pump itself may not be doing its job, or the thermostat may be set up to bring the strips on too readily. That is worth a service visit before it is worth a second winter of high bills.
Rooms that never get comfortable
A common Modesto complaint is a two-storey house where the upstairs runs five or more degrees hotter than downstairs in July. Village One, Sylvan and Salida have a lot of these. The cause is rarely one broken part. It is usually some combination of ducts undersized for the upstairs, a single thermostat at the bottom of the stairs, and an attic that bakes the upstairs ceiling.
What helps
Balancing the dampers that are already there, sealing duct leaks in the attic, and checking that the return air path upstairs is not blocked are the cheap steps. Zoning or a second system are the expensive ones. An honest assessment starts with measuring airflow at the registers rather than recommending new equipment.
What does not
Turning the thermostat down further. It makes downstairs colder and runs the system longer, and the upstairs stays where it was.
Thermostats and wiring
A new smart thermostat installed on old wiring is one of the most frequent causes of a system that suddenly behaves strangely: the blower runs constantly, the heat pump heats when it should cool, or backup heat never comes on. Heat pumps in particular need the reversing valve set correctly in the thermostat's configuration. If the trouble started the week a thermostat was changed, say so on the call; it can save a long diagnosis. MID's rebate catalog includes ENERGY STAR smart thermostats, so a replacement may be partly covered.
Package units and mini-splits
Not every Modesto home has a split system. Some have a package unit, with everything in one cabinet on a pad or on the roof, and many additions and converted garages run a ductless mini-split. Both are repaired by the same trade and the same licence, but parts and access differ. Mention which you have when you call.
Licensing
Heat pumps, mini-splits, package units and thermostats wired to them all fall under the CSLB's C-20 classification. Check the licence on the CSLB's lookup before work starts.
Heat pump iced over or a room that will not cool? Call and describe it. A local heating and air company will follow up.
Common questions
Why is steam coming off my heat pump?
It is almost certainly in defrost. In foggy, near-freezing weather the outdoor coil frosts up and the heat pump melts it off every so often. Steam and a pause in the outdoor fan are normal.
Why is my heat pump blowing cool air in winter?
During defrost the indoor air can feel cool for a few minutes. If it stays cool, the backup heat or the reversing valve may have a fault, or the system may be low on refrigerant.
What does HVAC repair cost in Modesto?
It depends on the fault. Thermostat and wiring problems are often quick. Duct sealing and balancing are priced by the job. Reversing valves and compressors are major repairs.
Is a mini-split repaired by the same people?
Yes. The same C-20 licence covers ductless systems, though not every company carries parts for every brand.
Do you repair heat pumps yourselves?
No. We are an advertising and referral service. Your call goes to an independent heating and air company that does the work.
